THE hottest names in Australian music are gearing up for this year's ARIA Awards at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday.

In a bid to shorten the ceremony and for the first time in the event's history, the majority of the 31 awards were handed out over a week of live concerts at Sydney's Royal Botanical Gardens, with three more to be announced tonight.

The final 11 awards, including four new publicly voted categories, will be handed out at Sunday's official ceremony.

Artists hitting the Opera House stage include Powderfinger, Megan Washington, Angus and Julia Stone, Birds of Tokyo, Sia, John Butler Trio, Guy Sebastian and INXS fronted by Dan Sultan.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Dylan Lewis take on the hosting duties while a colourful list of presenters includes Lara Bingle, Carmen Electra, Bob Katter MP, Modern Family actor Eric Stonestreet, Ruby Rose, Silverchair's Chris Joannou, Operator Please, Clare Bowditch, Kasey Chambers, Fuzzy, Myf Warhurst and Ronan Keating.

The ARIA Awards will air in a delayed broadcast on TEN on Sunday night, from the Sydney Opera House.

The new-look event is produced by FremantleMedia Australia, following a flirt with the Nine Network last year, and with Roving Productions from 2002 – 2008.

The Red Carpet arrivals can be seen on MTV from 6:30pm.

of Tokyo and Angus and Julia Stone are all set to perform. Nat Bass and Dylan Lewis are hosting the event and

Pain in the ARIAs for musicians

HE has attended the biggest and best award ceremonies the world has to offer during his Boyzone heyday.

So Ronan Keating knows what he is talking about when he gives the ARIA Awards the thumbs down.

The X Factor judge took to Twitter yesterday to rename the haphazard awards the "hilarias".

Keating was particularly unimpressed that his X Factor co-star, Guy Sebastian, did not pick up one award despite scoring nominations in six categories.

"Cannot believe Guy did not get at least 3 Awards at Aria's last night. Industry folk are a joke. Guy is best artist in the country," Keating wrote.

Keating was not alone in finding the awards a turn-off.

The show, broadcast by Channel 10, drew just 624,000 viewers on Sunday night, more than halving the audience of 1.44 million who tuned in to the lead-in program, Junior MasterChef.

Producers tried a different tack with the show, broadcasting from the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House.

Presenters were perched messily on the edge of the crowd and lacked any authority.

Lara Bingle was pretty but pointless, Jessica Mauboy pronounced debut as "de-butt", Bob Katter stumbled over the name of the event, and Marcia Hines' acknowledgment of the passing of Models frontman James Freud was lost on viewers and the Opera House audience.
