RONAN KEATING is teaming up with easy listening legend BURT BACHARACH on his upcoming album.

The BOYZONE star describes the collaborative project as a "concept" record, with both singers alternating lead vocal duties.

He revealed: "I've got an album happening in March with Burt Bacharach.

"He's going to produce it, there are some of his songs, some of my songs, him playing, me singing and vice versa."

Eighteen years into his career, Ronan believes Burt's involvement in the album is a nod to his staying power in the music industry.

He added: "Longevity in this industry opens incredible doors for you.

"Legendary artists wait and see what is going to happen with younger artists, if they're going to be a flash in the pan or not.

"After 18 years these doors are starting to properly open for me."

Ronan Keating has tweeted a pic of himself and Burt Bacharach working together in the studio.

“Ladies and Gents I give you Burt and I. What an Honour. X’ he uploaded earlier today.

Ronan is recording his new album at the Capitol Records building in Hollywood. He says that working with Burt Bacharach is “probably the greatest challenge as a singer I have ever known”.

He also mentioned Steve Perry had joined him in the studio.

The legendary songwriter works with the Irish heartthrob for release later this year.

Due to his work with Boyzone, Ronan Keaton’s solo career has been on hold recently. The Irish heartthrob is now back
in the studio recording his new album and has been tweeting little morsels about who he has been working with.

The singer posted a photo from the studio showing him and legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach. Ronan has been working
with the master on his new material which has to raise expectation over his new release when it comes out towards the end
of this year.

In the tweet, Ronan simply said, “'Ladies and Gents I give you Burt and I. What an Honour.”

The album is being recorded in Hollywood at the Capitol Records building. In another post he said that working with the legend
is the “greatest challenge as a singer” and I suppose when you’re working with one of the best in the business, it has to be
a little daunting.

As for other album collaborators, the singer also said that Steve Perry has been in the studio too. There are a few months
until the album is complete, but expect more updates from the Irish Twitterer in the future.

Ronan is delighted to officially announce the release of his brand new album with Burt Bacharach, 'When Ronan Met Burt'.

The album which saw Ronan team up with one of his all-time heroes is set for release on 21st March and is available to pre-order now from: AMAZON, PLAY and HMV.

Backed by a full orchestra, the result was a spectacular album recorded by the duo earlier this year. All the tracks featured are classics composed by Burt over the course of his impressive fifty year career and include instantly recognisable hits such as ‘Walk On By’, ‘The Look Of Love’, ‘What The World Needs Now Is Love’ and ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’. All the tracks were recorded live with a full orchestra, ensuring that the grandeur and stature of these timeless classics was captured and conserved.

“It has been a dream come true to work with Burt on this album,” Ronan says of the collaboration. “I grew up listening to his songs and the tracks we’ve chosen to record for the album are simply some of the greatest pop masterpieces ever written, so it was an honour to sing them alongside the man himself.”

Speaking about the recording session Ronan said, ‘It was one of the hardest sessions I’ve done. It’s hard enough trying to do justice to such legendary tunes but to record them with the man himself was another level of pressure’.

Burt said of the process, ‘To do these songs with a different slant and approach on them made it very interesting for me. And too be able to work with Ronan and expose these songs to maybe a younger audience as well as my fan base. Then to be able to record it in the legendary Capitol recording studio - full orchestra live. Quite a trip we were on Ronan.’

Ten songs may seem a short measure for an album like this, but a quick glance down its titles – The Look of Love, Walk on By, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again – guarantees a level of expertise that has made Burt Bacharach a legendary songwriting figure in his lifetime. This Ronan Keating-starring collection also includes several numbers written outside Bacharach’s celebrated partnership with lyricist Hal David, including Arthur’s Theme and This House Is Empty Now, with Elvis Costello as lyricist. Neither song, from a little later, quite showcase Bacharach at his innovative best. His collaboration with David on the score for Lost Horizon, released in 1973, was a failure and seemed to knock some of the stuffing out of him.

Keating arrives fresh to Bacharach’s songs with an awareness of their recorded history, yet no slave to their past interpretations. He may not possess the velvet tones of George Michael or the debonair vocal style of Robbie Williams, two of his contemporaries who have previously mined the standards catalogue, yet there’s a sincerity and sense of discovery to his approach that, despite any misgivings regarding the lack of sonority in his voice, is rather endearing. Bacharach, who produced this album alongside Greg Wells, is one of several arrangers. We can relish his talents on the chirpy Something Big and the film song My Little Red Book, as individual and challenging to sing as What’s New Pussycat?, from the same film. Keating tackles both these numbers with great zest, giving them welcome new leases of life.

He sings the very familiar I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself at a slower speed than Dusty Springfield, with the intention of giving the song a greater gravitas, and only just falls short of her classic interpretation. All of the sympathetic arrangements display an innate understanding of the Bacharach style, the unorthodox phrasing, the twists in the tunes that have made him a unique and influential songwriter. And with this release, Keating reaffirms his pre-eminence as a major figure in the pop world.

Whatever you think about Ronan Keating as a person, you can’t argue with the fact that over the past two decades, he’s sang on some of the finest pop songs known to man. ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ is a contemporary pop classic, and Boyzone’s takes on pop standards were as good as any in the business. Recently, he hooked up with legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach in the US for a hasty recording session, from which these ten songs emerged. Keating says that he didn’t get to spend as much time on these songs as he would have liked, but the results don’t show anything lacking.

Opening with ‘The Look of Love’, it’s guaranteed that you’ll know this material and have heard these songs many, many times. Bacharach was one of the best songwriters ever, and this album reminds us of that. But how do these songs fit into the Keating canon? Very well, actually. Always the strongest singer in Boyzone, and with a bundle of decent solo singles, we know Keating has the chops for monstrous tunes like these. ‘Walk on By’ is a particular highlight, as is ‘What the World Needs Now’, and all sound like the Keating you have heard countless times before.

That’s what this album is, a record for Ronan Keating fans, for Boyzone fans, and for pop fans generally. If you spend your time musically gazing at your shoes, you know this album isn’t going to be for you, but if you’ve been a fan of Ronan Keating in the past, it’s an album to make yourself comfortable with. If just for his take on ‘Arthur’s Theme (The Best You Can Do)’. Why has he never covered it before? Fantastic.

Having patched up his family difficulties, Ronan Keating is looking ahead and knuckling down.

The Irish singer returned to Sydney this week with a new album to promote, a first film role to shoot and a second judging stint on The X-Factor to negotiate.

Keating confirmed his next 12 months are already mapped into a hectic working schedule that combines his passions for music, film and TV.

"It's funny how it all happens at once sometimes and then you might have a year where nothing's going on," Keating told AAP in Sydney.

"You kind of make hay while the sun shines and keep going."

Keating's first project of 2011 has been recording an album with legendary singer songwriter Burt Bacharach in New York, called When Ronan Met Burt.

A covers album of Bacharach's songs, including Arthur's Theme and I'll Never Fall In Love Again, Keating was accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra and session musicians from Michael Jackson's former stable.

The collaboration was a dream come true for Keating who has been a fan of Bacharach's music since he was a child.

"You wouldn't believe how involved he was," Keating said of 82-year-old Bacharach, who co-produced the album.

"He listened to everything that went on, he's so clued in and talented, and more enthusiastic than ever."

Keating could adopt a few tips as he looks to crack his pursuit of acting with a starring role in the Australian-made film, Goddess, which started shooting on Monday.

He's previously been turned down for roles in Moulin Rouge and The Hobbit, but believes two years of acting training has prepared him for the new comedy musical.

The 34-year-old plays the role of a marine biologist opposite actress Laura Michelle Kelly, most recently seen as Mary Poppins on Broadway,who has helped Keating prepare for life on set.

"I'm loving it so far because you actually become the character," he said.

"You have this amazing back story even though the back story isn't in the movie in any way, so I've loved doing all the research."

Music will always be Keating's number one priority, but he hopes that acting could develop steadily alongside his pop career.

The former Boyzone star realises a lot of hard work lies ahead, but has already lined up another role to start in September.

"Acting is totally different from music," Keating said.

"I've been performing on stage singing and dancing since I was 16, but going into a studio and looking someone in the eye and delivering lines, listening to what they have to say and bouncing back is an incredible head space to be in."

And what of that other head space - as a judge on X Factor?

Keating confirmed he's close to signing on for the second series of the Channel Seven talent show.

With three careers stretching in tandem, a few recent words offered by Sir Ian McKellen could be applied to either.

"Ian gave me some kind advice about acting, which was walk into the room, look them in the eye and tell them the truth.

"When you think about it is exactly what you do."

No way! There’s nothing I like about my face or my body, honest! I hate my teeth, my hair and…what else? The reason why I have the confidence to go on stage and perform is because I love my music so much.

And, added Ronan (who turned 34 last March 3), “ever since I was a kid, music has been my biggest passion.”

It’s true what they say about Ronan, the youngest and shyest among the five members of Boyzone, one of the original boy bands which continues to regroup for a tour even if they have decided to go on a break (not actually to disband) more than a decade ago. He’s soft-spoken, gentle and shrinks from being described as a younger version of Clint Eastwood, with eyes so sad (like those of Boyzone Stephen Gately, the one who “outed” himself and, only a few years later, died in his sleep while vacationing in Spain with his partner) that you can almost feel it (that sadness) in his songs, particularly his well-loved hit When You Say Nothing At All (theme song of the romance-comedy Notting Hill, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant).

“The best perk of fame?” Ronan also said then. “Yes, seeing people sing along to my songs and knowing that my music is making a lot of people happy,” adding, “I was at a bar and a guy came up to me and said, ‘Ronan, I think your voice is fantastic and your album is cool.’ That, I feel, is a greater compliment than anything else…”

That “fantastic voice” is at its best in Ronan’s latest (seventh album) When Ronan Met Burt which carries 10 enduring Burt Bacharach songs and released last month in the Philippines by MCA Music.

Conversations did an exclusive phone interview with Ronan recently.

How were you able to convince Bacharach to do an album with you?

“I didn’t have to convince him. It was actually Burt who came up with the idea of me and him working together. He broached the idea to the record company. Then, Burt called me and that’s it.”

Why Bacharach of all the great songwriters around?

“Why not Burt? He has covered the greatest songs of all time. Over the last 50 years he has written many of the best songs that are still on the radio today. So, you know, it’s a great honor for me to have this opportunity and to be the one that he chose.”

I understand that, like millions of others around the world, you are a big fan of Bacharach.

“Yes, I am. It has been a dream come true to work with Burt. I grew up listening to his songs and the tracks we’ve chosen to record for the album are simply some of the greatest pop masterpieces ever written.”

It’s a pity that you and Bacharach didn’t do even one duet. Did he give you tips?

“We worked closely together on this album. We shared a lot of ideas. We spoke about our choices of songs, how we wanted the album to sound. The first time we met was at the Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Basically, you know, he didn’t really give me any tips. We were just two professionals working together for the best of the album.”

Did he guide you during the recording?

“He just told me what he wanted for the album and I kept that in mind. But I must say that it was one of the hardest sessions I’ve ever done. It’s hard enough trying to do justice to such legendary songs but to record them with the man himself was another level of pressure.”

What were the Bacharach songs that you grew up with?

“Among them: The Look Of Love, Walk On By, What The World Needs Now and many others. Most of them are on the album.” (Note: The others are I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Arthur’s Theme [The Best That You Can Do], My Little Red Book, Something Big, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, This House Is Empty Now and Make It Easy On Yourself.)

Did you give the songs a new “twist”?

“Not a ‘new twist,’ really. I just sing the songs the way that I usually sing and perform, and emotionally how I can attach to the songs. That, I guess, is what I bring to Burt’s songs.”

Up to now, even if you’ve done a lot of other songs, people fondly remember you for When You Say Nothing At All.

“There’s been a lot of different songs that I’ve been doing through the years. Yeah, I’m glad that people are still singing that song. And I’m also grateful that after 18 years I’m still around.”

Of course, you and the other Boyzone guys have broken up years ago but you did a reunion concert in 2007. Are you in touch with the three other members?

“We didn’t really break up. I wouldn’t say that we broke up. We just felt that we’d been together for so long that we kind of got stuck in a mold and we needed time away from each other. We needed a break, we needed to do something new individually because together, we were becoming mechanical, just going through the motions. Oh yes, we are in touch. We just recently did an arena tour in the UK. We continue working together. Maybe we’ll do an album together before the year is over.”
It’s sad that Stephen left us all too suddenly a few years ago.

“Stephen may not be around anymore but he continues to be with us. During our recent tour, we did a tribute to him. It’s been tough, very tough, without him but, you know, we try to move on. Up to now, we still feel the loss; we are still going through a grieving period.”

It’s only the four members going on tour now. Haven’t you ever thought of looking for a replacement for Stephen?

“No. Never, never, never!”

How did Stephen’s death affect your outlook in life?

“It has made me love my wife and my children even more; it has made me work even harder at my career.”

How do you divide your time between your career and your family?

“I try to spend quality time at home so that I can go on the road and work hard and go back to have more quality time with my family. That’s the way I keep a balance between my family and my work.”


What are your most cherished memories with Boyzone?

“I have nothing but sweet memories with the Boyzone, too many of them to single out just one.”

When you listen to the current breed of boy bands, how do you feel about them? You know, you’ve been there, done that.

“Oh, there’s a lot of great music around.”


What are the challenges that you have to handle while going solo?

“You know, when you’re in a band, you have the camaraderie and the friendship. On your own, in the beginning it was very scary. You carry the weight on your shoulders with nobody to share it with. As Boyzone, the five of us members were responsible for our work. I could feel the pressure because I knew that people were expecting too much from me. But I l love the challenges and I’m glad that I was able to hurdle them. Now on my own, I get a lot of opportunities to continue to prove myself, like a chance to work with Burt Bacharach.”


You’ve been in Manila a few times, with the Boyzone and alone when you promoted your eponymous solo debut album. Any chance for you to come to Manila again maybe to promote When Ronan Met Burt?

“I hope so. I’m talking to the promoter for the possibility of my doing a promo tour in Asia. So I’m sure I will go back to Manila.”

HE COULD easily walk on by and make it easy on himself, but Ronan Keating loves a challenge.

So next year the Irish vocalist and X-Factor judge is planning to climb to base camp on Mt Everest.

"I'd love to succeed in climbing the mountain itself one day," he says.

In the meantime, Keating has conquered a musical mountain in the shape of pop maestro Burt Bacharach. The two men joined forces in a North American recording studio to cut an album of Bacharach standards called When Ronan Met Burt. And, as Keating reveals, it wasn't always a smooth ride.

Q: What was it like collaborating with Burt Bacharach?

A. On day one, it was intimidating, I must admit. Here I am with one of the greatest songwriters of all time and a 40-piece orchestra. (Laughing) Couldn't be any worse.

To make things harder, I've read you had a strict time limit on recording.

That's right. Three days in total. Hour and a half per song. Burt was there all the way and he could be quite strict -- a taskmaster -- if he didn't feel we were getting what he wanted. He pushed me and pushed me again.

Any testy exchanges?

There was one moment where he really felt I wasn't coming to grips with a song and said, "Hey, man, why don't you just sing the melody I wrote?"

What was the hardest Bacharach number to master?

Walk On By. It's a beautiful song, but the greatest challenge. You know, when you hear Burt's songs on the radio, they have this great simplicity about them but you try and sing them. Man, they have some of the most complex melodies and chord progressions ... unbelievable.

Bacharach's back catalogue is gigantic. How did you settle on just 10 songs (including The Look Of Love, What The World Needs Now and Something Big)?

Burt and I worked together on it. There were songs he felt passionate about and vice versa.

And did you listen to some '60s era recordings by Dionne Warwick or Jackie DeShannon?

Yes, listened to all of those and they're so brilliant. Thing is, I tried not to copy them. I wanted to make them my own and that's what Burt wanted too. The effort was worthwhile because these are some of the best vocals I've ever delivered.

That's a big statement...

I mean it. I know I can walk into a room and hold my head high, that's for sure.

Have you and Bacharach come through the experience as friends?

I hope I'm a friend of his now. I think he likes me.

Could this be the start of a series of great songwriter collaborations?

Yeah, I guess I have this brand now -- "When Ronan Met ... " where I could do another.

What about Paul McCartney?

It would be a great honour to work with McCartney.

And are you really serious about conquering Everest?

Yes. Something as extreme as that intrigues and excites me.

Suddenly, you're sounding like Bear Grylls...

I'm a big fan of his show (Man Vs. Wild). Fantastic. Actually, I think Bear should get some celebs and take 'em into the wild.

You'd accept an invitation?

Sure. It'd be cracking.

Mum's the word on music charts

A bumper week of sales in the lead up to Mother's Day has spilled over into this week's ARIA albums chart, with the likes of Michael Buble and Ronan Keating leaping back into the top 10 after weeks of little movement.

Adele's platinum-selling record 21 stood strong for a third consecutive week at number one having enjoyed a massive 41 per cent jump in sales during the week.

And after five weeks on the chart, Ronan Keating and Burt Bacharach have finally cracked into the top three on the back of Mother's Day, jumping 10 spots with their record When Ronan Met Burt.

Ronan Keating and Burt Bacharach jump from 13 to 3 to retake the top selling veteran artist on the Australian Album chart. The replace the Beastie Boys who drop 7 to 16.
