RONAN Keating says his acting debut in Goddess, a kitchen sink musical currently shooting on the outskirts of Sydney, is the culmination of a decade's worth of hard work.

"I've been doing castings for years," said the Irish singer on set in Bringelly this week, revealing he had screen tested for Moulin Rouge, King Arthur and The Hobbit.

"My plan was not to do a movie that had music in it. [Goddess] just came my way and I think it's the perfect transition for me. It's almost like a stepping stone -- a great way to cross over.

"And I love to sing. The funny thing is, I only have one and a half songs in this film."

Most of the musical responsibilities on Goddess are shouldered by Keating's leading lady Laura Michelle Kelly, who has taken a four-month sabbatical from the Broadway production of Mary Poppins to play a recent British immigrant stuck in an isolated farmhouse in Tasmania with two unruly toddlers while her husband (Keating) is off saving the world's whales.

To overcome her isolation, the reluctant housewife performs funny sink songs to a web cam installed in her kitchen -- becoming an overnight cyber sensation in the process.

A MAJOR film starring Irish singer Ronan Keating started life at a kitchen sink in Mosman.

The film has been written by actress and songwriter Joanna Weinberg who’s elated that an idea conceived in her Mosman home is now being made into a musical on the big screen.

Weinberg will perform one of the songs from the film at her concert at Mosman Art Gallery on May 21.

The film is called Goddess and is being shot in locations in Tasmania and Sydney.

The film also stars Magda Szubanski and Laura Michelle Kelly, with musical director Judy Morris of Happy Feet fame.

It is Keating’s first acting role.

“The first day on the set Ronan was terrified but he’s brilliant in the film,” says Weinberg.

The film is no overnight success story for Weinberg.

Apart from fine-tuning the script, there has been the usual struggle to raise finance for the film which is backed by Screen Australia.

‘It’s taken eight years and there’s been lots of tears and frustration,” Weinberg said.

“The co-writer and director Mark Samprell and I have worked and worked on the script. There were times I was tempted to give up.”

The film is based on Weinberg’s show Sinksongs about a housewife who sings at her kitchen sink to a webcam and dreams of stardom.

A film producer saw Weinberg perform the show at the Mosman RS Club eight years ago and announced the show would make a wonderful film.

Sinksongs was also borne out of her own experience of moving to Sydney from South Africa and sacrificing her career there as a leading actress.

“Moving to a new a country can be very lonely,” she said. “For the first couple of years in Mosman, I was at home with two small children and a husband whose job required his total devotion.

“The idea for the film was not about being famous but reaching out.”

Keating plays the husband in the film who is off saving whales while his wife is stuck at home at the kitchen sink.

The film will be released nationally in cinemas next year.

Laura Michelle Kelley stars as a young mother who is poised for international stardom.



Ealing Metro International has come on board to handling sales on Goddess, a new musical comedy. The cast features Laura Michelle Kelley (Who won an Olivier award for her West End portrayal of Mary Poppins) and Ronan Keating (singer formerly of Boyzone); the latter makes his screen debut.

Mark Lamprell (co-writer of Babe: Pig In The City and director of After The Rain) will direct, with Judy Morris (co-director of Happy Feet) as musical director.

The story is about a mother of twin toddlers who writes witty songs to cure her boredom while her husband is away working. When she posts them online, international stardom beckons.

Producers are Richard Keddie (Hawke and Little Fish) and Andrena Finlay (Razzle Dazzle, Priscilla Queen of the Desert).   

Ealing Metro International will introduce the project to buyers at the forthcoming AFM and show a promo of the film, which is still in post-production.

Village Roadshow executive produced and plans a wide release in summer 2012 in Australia/New Zealand.

We caught up with Ronan Keating on the red carpet who was promoting his debut film Goddess, which tells the story of a young mother of twin boys, married to Keating’s character who installs a webcam in her kitchen to watch her children and fast turns into an internet sensation with her funny kitchen songs.

On his involvement in the Australian film, Ronan said:

“I was in Vietnam doing a gig and Mark (Lampress, the film’s director) was looking for someone to play this character. So he jumped on a plane with the script and we workshopped it for three or four hours in the hotel and before he left he said ‘You’re perfect’, which was just overwhelming for me because I thought this guy’s crazy coming out to Vietnam (laughs). And then they asked me to do it so I jumped at the chance and it’s just been a dream job. We shot three and a half months here in Australia… and it was just a dream and I’m ready for the next one.”

Australian Creative: Post production company FSM's new film Goddess

FSM will manage all visual effects, digital intermediates and post-production, as well as managing data on set.
Goddess will be shot at some of Sydney’s most iconic and beautiful locations, in Tasmania and in the studio.
The film’s director is Mark Lamprell, the musical director is Judy Morris, the film’s producer is Richard Keddie, and Steve Dunn will manage post-production and visual effects.

UK sales agent Ealing Metro International Ltd will handle rights to Australian feel good film Goddess. The film will screen in the Cannes Market Marche du Film.

The film is directed by Australia's Mark LAMPRELL (My Mother Frank (2000)).

LONDON – Mark Lamprell's Australian musical comedy Goddess is to make its market debut during the upcoming Marche du Film with Irish popstar Ronan Keating and Laura Michelle Kelly on hand to create a song and dance for buyers.

Sales and finance banner Ealing Metro International will hawk the movie featuring Keating in his acting debut and the Olivier award-winning musical theater star Kelly in a story of a young housewife’s unexpected path to fame and fortune.

Set in Southern Australia the movie also features Magda Szubanski (TV's cult comedy Kath & Kim).

A scheduled marketing stunt lined up for the Croisette will see the movie's stars lead a parade of "yummy mummies’ complete with prams and crocs down the Croisette.

Goddess is based on a screenplay by Lamprell and Joanna Weinberg with Judy Morris (co-director of Happy Feet) as musical director.

The project's executive producers Village Roadshow will distribute the film in both Australia and New Zealand.

Roadshow Films announced today that it will release the Australian musical Goddess in cinemas on 7 March 2013.

Starring Laura Michelle Kelly and Ronan Keating, much-loved comedian Magda Szubanski, Hugo Johnstone-Burt and Lucy Durack, Goddess was shot over nine weeks in Tasmania and the outskirts and CBD of Sydney.

An extraordinary songstress, the Olivier Award winning Kelly has received critical acclaim from Broadway to the West End for her performance as Mary Poppins – a role she took leave from to shoot Goddess.

A major international recording artist and X-Factor judge, Keating has sold more than 22million albums and is the only person ever to have 30 consecutive top 10 singles in the UK charts. Goddess marks his first feature film role.

Director Mark Lamprell and producer Richard Keddie recently returned from France where Goddess screened at the Cannes International Film Festival market.
